Co-op placements and work permits

Review Canadian co-op placement requirements with a Toronto RCIC. Value Visa checks school records, permit conditions and whether a work permit is needed.

Planning your application

IRCC changed the rules on April 1, 2026: post-secondary students no longer need a separate co-op work permit for required student placements, provided they meet the applicable placement conditions. Secondary school students still need a co-op work permit. Start by identifying which requirements apply to your program.

How Value Visa can help

Value Visa reviews your study permit conditions, school letter and required placement details. We help identify whether a permit application or another document issue needs attention instead of assuming that every internship requires the same application. Tell us the start date and whether your program is secondary or post-secondary.

Your review is specific to your circumstances. We explain the proposed work and confirm fees in writing before beginning. Government fees are separate.

Documents to discuss

Bring the records you already have to the consultation. This starting list does not replace the personalized checklist for your application.

  • School letter describing the required placement
  • Study permit and passport
  • Program and placement dates
  • Any previous work authorization

For the initial inquiry, describe your situation and deadlines. Ask us how to share sensitive documents before emailing identity or financial records.

Current official guidance

Requirements, fees and processing information can change. Use the official instructions alongside advice about your own circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Do all international students need a co-op work permit?

No. Under IRCC's April 1, 2026 change, qualifying post-secondary student placements do not require a separate co-op work permit. Secondary students still need one. We review the school documentation and your permit conditions against the current guidance.

What will a consultation cover?

We discuss your goal, immigration history and the documents available, identify questions that need further review and explain the scope of assistance. Fees are confirmed in writing before work begins; government fees are separate.

Can Value Visa guarantee approval or a processing date?

No. IRCC makes immigration decisions, and processing times can change. We help prepare a complete, consistent application and explain the next steps without promising an outcome.
